The Current State (and Limitations) of Security Training
While some states have requirements to meet to obtain a guard card, security training best practices remain fragmented and limited.
As a result, each security company takes a different approach. While some firms adopt strict internal standards, many lack a clear direction regarding training quality.
Training can also vary greatly depending on a company’s size and budget. Unfortunately, prioritizing training and ensuring high quality of training can be challenging for smaller security firms.
How Fragmentation Impacts Security Training
The lack of clear, unified standards leads to an inconsistent approach to training. The level of preparedness can vary substantially from one firm to another, and in some cases, there are also discrepancies from one cohort to another.
For security guards looking to develop their careers, inconsistent access to training can be a drawback. Relocating to another state can also be difficult since their past experiences might not be valued.
Customers are also impacted. Assessing the quality of the services offered is difficult when there are no common security training best practices. Firms with a strong communication strategy often have an advantage since they can demonstrate that they take training seriously, while others might struggle to establish trust.
Even though the demand for security is rising, finding customers can be difficult for firms that fail to communicate about their training strategy.

The result of this partnership is the Defencify Academy, a three-tier program developed to help security guards achieve excellence. This program aligns with the ASIS Guidelines for Security Officer Training and includes everything security guards need to succeed.
