What You Need to Include on Your Security Guard Resume

Many security officers are often unsure of what should be included on their security guard resume. To help make your application process easier, we have a few tips for you to include on the document.  Security guards are responsible for ensuring the safety of a business or other property. As a security guard, your future employers will be putting a significant amount of trust in you and will want to be clear about the employee they're hiring. A security guard resume is an important document that tells employers about your qualifications and skills, as well as what you want to do in your career.

As a security officer, it is important to have all of the tools necessary for success. One of those tools is a professional resume. This document should include some basic information about you that will help employers make decisions on whether or not they want to interview you. It should also show why you would be an ideal candidate for their company by including information like your education level, work experience, and any special qualifications that might set you apart from other candidates. In this blog post, we will not only explain the objective of a professional resume, but we have also put together some critical things to include on your security officer resume.

Objective Of A Security Guards Resume

The objective of your security guard resume should be a statement of what you want in terms of opportunity, achievement, and responsibility. In other words, it tells the employer why they should give you an interview by showing them that you have something unique or special about yourself that is worth considering for their company. For example, you could say that your objective is "to show my commitment to security and the customer by effectively preventing crime." They will want a lot more detail, but this gives them an idea of what you have in mind.

If you want to put a personal touch on your application, you can add a cover letter as well. A security guard cover letter might include a brief explanation of why you are qualified for the position, and any special experiences or perspectives you have that aren't on your resume.

Skills To Include On Your Resume

Security guards are in charge of ensuring the security and safety of the property. In order to do this, you must have excellent communication and problem-solving skills, as well as reliability and trustworthiness. Employers will want to see these skills on your security guard resume.

Likely, you won't always be working alone, so teamwork and collaboration skills will also be expected from your employer.

Unless your employer offers it, you'll need to go through a security guard training program. These can be done online and will provide you with critical experience and an edge over other applicants.

English Language Proficiency is usually critical if you are working in the US, and should be included on your security guard resume if your first language isn't English.

The resume should also include relevant security guard skills you have and any certifications that you have accomplished. Put anything like firearm qualifications, CPR certification, basic first aid training, etc.

Personal Protective Equipment Use/Training (PPE) for Chemical Incidents or Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Training can also be a huge bonus to have listed.

You should also consider including any computer/IT skills that could be applicable to this job in particular.  This includes the ability to work with databases, excel spreadsheets, word processing programs (MS Word), etc.

Experience To Include On Your Resume

A security guard resume should include a few bullet points about work history or experience with any companies that employ or have employed them in the past. You want to be careful not to list too many jobs- employers might think it's suspicious. Longevity of work and loyalty are qualities employers look for on a security guard resume.

If you've worked as a security guard before, definitely include that, as well as any references who can vouch for the quality of your work.

When listing jobs, make sure to include the company name, location, and dates of employment.  Also, include a brief description of job duties/responsibilities.

Additional responsibilities or certifications gained during tenure with the company that pertains to security guard work can also be listed on your security guard resume. For example, if you obtained your security guard license while working for the company, that should definitely be included on the resume.

Education is another important detail to add. A high-school diploma or a university degree in security or a related field can give you an edge over other candidates.

If you're looking to change careers or find a new job in another area of security work, include any education/certification that may help with this transition.  For example: "I have completed my first aid and CPR certification as part of my  security guard training with XYZ Security Company."

You should also include any notable achievements or awards you've received while working in security.  For example, I was awarded "Security Officer of the Month" for my work during (month) of 2013."

If you're looking to transition from a law enforcement career into a security guard job,  you may also want to include your law enforcement experience on your security guard resume.

Remember, the objective of a security guard resume is to highlight any relevant qualifications that could aid in employment, whether they be from supplemental education or work history. You want to differentiate yourself from other applicants and make it easier for hiring managers at potential employers to see what skills you bring to the table.

If you have no experience,  your security guard resume may include achievements and awards from high school or college. This will give the employer a better sense of who you are outside of work life. A few examples would be: "I was voted 'Most Likely to Succeed' by my graduating class," or "Received an award for academic excellence from my high school."

If you are currently in the military, it is important to include that on your security guard resume. This will show leadership skills and a good work ethic.  You should also include your rank or enlistment status if appropriate (E-x/O-x) with these achievements as well as any other relevant cert
